Mackinac Island
has approximately 500-600 permanent residents. Most of these people live live in Harrisonville, a community located in the center of the Island. Others live downtown, at Stonecliffe, Woodbluff, and British Landing. Mackinac Island is a summertime resort island where most businesses close up for the winter and reopen around the first week of May. Springtime on Mackinac Island offers blue skies, crisp temperatures, and the bustle of the new season. Seasonal businesses open their doors in early May honoring Mother’s Day with the celebratory weekend fast becoming one of Michigan’s rites of spring. Mackinac State Historic Park also opens its historic sites to the public in May. Since the mid-1800s, tourists have been visiting the island in the summers to escape the heat of the cities. Today, visitors also come to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of this island that seems lost in time. Businesses on the island cater to the tourists with accommodations such as grand hotels, retail stores, art galleries, restaurants, and summer rentals being the mainstay of the economy.
