Mackinac Island Weather
is moderate in the summer and cold in the winter. In summer, with cool mornings and warmer afternoons, Islanders suggest dressing in layers, shedding sweaters, etc, as the day progresses putting them on again in the cool of the evening. Winters are very cold and by February, the Straits freeze and Lake Huron is covered with ice. Average temperatures: May 50-degrees, June 64-degrees, July 70-degrees, August 71-degrees, September 63-degrees, and October 50-degrees. No cars are allowed on Mackinac Island – three ferry companies transport visitors and residents from the mainland. Usually in the month of February the water freezes between Mackinac Island and St. Ignace. At that time, some brave soul goes out to check the thickness of the ice. If they make it halfway, it's on to St. Ignace. The residents have stockpiled their used Christmas trees out at British Landing in anticipation of this call. The trees are "planted" at intervals to mark the "highway" and the fun begins. It is the only time of the year when the residents are not dependent on a set schedule and of course it's free!
